What to do around the Coromandel ..

Local info & sightseeing suggestions

Kuaotunu

A seaside settlement 18km north of Whitianga. It has a local store, famous for its icecream, cafe and LUKES KITCHEN, popular with locals and visitors where delicious pizza is cooked in a wood fired oven. Country casual and very friendly.

Local industry includes a knife maker, artists, potters, roasted macedamia nuts and honey.

Restaurants

There are a variety of excellent restaurants in both Whitianga and Coromandel towns. Matarangi, a 10 minute drive, has the golf Club Restaurant and Pipers Cafe open for lunch 7 days and evening meals during summer. Castle Rock Cafe is also open for lunches and some evening meals.

As quiet beaches and restaurants don't go together you are welcome to bring something prepared to enjoy on your deck if you do not wish to drive out again on night of arrival. With the exception of the Studio there are no cooking facilities but we will provide plates etc. If you are driving from the south the New World Supermarket in Whitianga has a good Deli and is open till 8pm, also in Coromandel is the Smoking Co selling prepared fish and an organic shop with cheeses and breads.

309 Road

This road links both sides of the peninsula with various attractions along the way. The Kauri Grove is an easy all weather track through bush ( about a 15min walk) where there is a lovely stand of kauri and a good example of how they grew. If you enjoy mussels the Mussel Kitchen on the corner of the 309 is a must visit.

Boat Trips

Picture
A variety of boating options are available. We are happy to help you with which trip best suits the weather of the day and your requirements. A boat trip is an excellent way to explore the coastline and see Cathedral Cove in a small boat with a knowledgeabe operator and avoid the crowds. Trips leave from Whitianga Wharf.

Beaches

KUAOTUNU BEACH is just across the road, a safe sandy beach, take a dip before breakfast. Dotterils nest here and you can take a 2 km walk to the cafe, gallery and Lukes Kitchen.  Dolphins are often seen swimming by.

OTAMA, a beautiful secluded beach over the scenic Black Jack Hill with Pohutukawa trees growing in the sand. The beach offers safe swimming and a lagoon. Wonderful for photography.

OPITO BAY is the next bay over from Otama, looking out to the islands, a long sweeping beach and safe swimming.
OPERA POINT can be reached after a short bush walk on to the sand and out to the headland at Whangapoua. A great place to view nesting birds. Shell fish abound.

NEW CHUMS BEACH is only accessable by foot or boat. Here yours may be the only footprint.

Golf

We are happy to make bookings for you at the Matarangi course, club hire available.

Stargazing

A wonderful way to view our night sky is with an Astronomy Tour at Stargazers. A research grade telescope. Rotating observatory. Alastair also has a unique collection of rocks and fossils. Bookings essential and weather dependant.

Coromandel (town)

Picture
Coromandel is a small town with a history of mining and timber milling, local art and craft  cafes, and the Driving Creek railway. Just out of town a picturesque 1 hour circular walk through a kauri grove and native bush on to the beach can be enjoyed. Visit Coromandel Smoking Co and choose from their great selection of delectables to take back to enjoy on your deck in the evening.
